Traces brings together two artists who touch on similar concepts within the medium of paint, concerning the familiar yet ambiguous nature of abstracted marks and shapes.

Corrina Eastwood

The representation of people and the workings of a human ‘inner world’ has been of interest to me of some time, and a concern within my artwork. I work with people with autism whilst studying Art Psychotherapy, where I also work in art with the mentally ill. The variations of a perceived external reality that I encounter when working with these members of our society interests me in relation to art, a form of communication that often transcends social barriers.

Issues of internal and external, what is remembered, perceived or not perceived, revealed or not revealed, are all concerns within the aesthetics and concepts of the work I create. My practise at present very much runs in parallel with my training as an Art Therapist and I consider issues such as the embodiment of images and what is invested within an art object by the artist, and the impact the aesthetics of a piece can have on a viewer in light of this investment. This is an issue that relates to the abstracted aesthetics of my work, and the viewer making their own investment in my paintings.

Traces of past actions, unnecessary marks, details and negative shapes that go unnoticed are observed or salvaged from memory and recreated. Combined they make ambiguous, familiar forms. They live comfortably in their own space.

Brains try to make some reason from them and sometimes figurative shapes emerge. But, most often eyes can rest on them and just indulge in the way they are.
