In the end, it is always about space

Diana Henebury | paintings | space 2

Underlying my practice is a set of pre-occupations to do with present perception, memory (visual and emotional), responses to political and cultural events, and the need to express and communicate whether in paint, text, or through objects or events, ideas and questions relating to these concerns.

When I made the paintings for this show, all of these concerns had to be expressed and organized in space. The process was one of my body and mind in relation to that surface, or space (in this case, canvas) which seems alive and responsive. I'm like a boxer dancing in the ring — attempting to say what is necessary in a given, limited space.

There are no absolutes and accidents are allowed, but everything is governed by an understanding of space and a certain painterly logic. So when it is finished, I know and I consciously leave space for meaning to be made, in that relationship between the object, the viewer and the particularly dynamic space in between.

Simply, I am an artist working in the real world now. Anything can happen but I follow Forster's dictat:
"Only connect".
