Ben Deakin

The intricate textures and marks of my paintings knit together to form writhing geological forms and landscapes which shift in scale and focus. What appear to be details of rocky slopes and rugged hillsides might lead the eye to expect a traditionally Romantic image of a mountainous vista. Here however, the forms collide and buckle in an evolutionary confusion, the images become disorientating, prompting the eye to explore and journey through the land-forms, seeking a rational perspective, so that the paintings become more about the visual experience of landscape than about a conventional view.

Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen

NBSL is an alter ego for the artist; he is a character who allows Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen to experience in the virtual space of video what is not possible in physical reality. While it is Nikolaj who writes, directs, films, acts in, and edits the work, it is NBSL who becomes the work, proving that through stubborn persistence and editing, in the world of video anything is possible.

Currently Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen is exploring ways of incorporating the notion of NBSL in a broader variety of media. By creating subtle interventions and objects, he is currently in the process of expanding his territory from solemnly being virtual, to also interacting with physical reality.

Hélène Martin

"Sweet dreams are made of cheese,
Who am I to disa-Brie."

Conrad Shawcross

My sculptures and machines marry current and historical concerns of science and philosophy with those of contemporary art. I am preoccupied with time and the scientific, philosophical, and cosmological concerns encountered when representing it. My work blurs the boundaries between artist and inventor, sculpture and folly, and lead us to question our conception of time and place.

Maria Teijido

My work is concerned with individuals' (in)communication and the use of urban space. I create models and views of particular aspects of architecture(s) and their interaction with the human figure. The piece presented in this show is somehow more abstract and minimal than previous work and incorporates the use of light and sound.

ACAVA's First Base Scheme
All the artists are in ACAVA's First Base Scheme which provides support for graduates of London's fine art courses in the year after their graduation. Each year twelve graduates are awarded a studio free for a year, professional development training, and an opportunity to gain experience working on exhibitions, public art, education and training projects. At the end of the year they organise and mount an exhibition of their work.

The project was set up by ACAVA in 1996 and is currently funded by London Arts and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
