This hoover sucks
July 10-20, 2002

Andrew Poulter and Jeanine Woollard | sculpture | space 2,3

Welcome to the vivacious world of 'this hoover sucks', a sumptuous morphing of works by Andrew Poulter and Jeanine Woollard … offering delicious visual delights, delicate witticisms, and cerebral trickery, the show aims to touch parts other enjoyments can't reach.

Andrew Poulter's array of familiar domestic canine silhouettes bound in, in packs of garish, sedate, contemporary, vulgar, and sombre hues. Playful, like spoof FBI murder cut-outs and carpeted to the standards of any palatial high rise, the dogs appear comfortably institutionalised yet wild at heart, at times flat and minimal, but with their own special animal humour.

With more than a whiff of surrealist japery, Jeanine Woollard's eclectic menagerie of objects meander through wordplay, equivocation, and mistaken identity. Sculpturally elegant and aesthetically sophisticated, objects gain new meanings and titles, whether menacingly beautiful or humorous and nonsensical, an overriding sense of playfulness is at work.
